Tamiya's
1/48 scale Stug III Ausf.B is available
online from Mission Models
Construction
The base kit is Tamiya's excellent new tool 1/48 scale Stug III
Ausf.B kit.
The model is built primarily out
of the box, but some minor items were scratchbuilt. The headlights
were wired, mesh grille screens were added over the engine intakes,
new grab handles were added, all weld beads were redone, a custom
towing cable was added, and the mounts for it were also
scratchbuilt.
Painting and Markings
The chipped winter camouflage
paint job is a combination of Tamiya and Lifecolor acrylics and
includes hand painted unit numbers and stenciled German cross.
The finish is via a layered
weathering process of Humbrol filters, Winsor & Newton oil paint
washes and more filters topped off with the all-important Mig
Pigments.
The tracks were painted with a
custom mix of Humbrols and then layered with more Mig Pigments and
graphite.
The cut off fenders add to the
unique heavily worn appearance of the model.
It is appropriately depicted in
Russia during the early harsh winter months of 1942.
The model was featured in Issue
116 of Tamiya Model Magazine International.
