DescriptionVespid Models is a brand new model company. Their two debut offerings, released simultaneously, are a 1:72 scale Maus V2 and a British Comet tank, also in 1:72 scale. Although I have never been a particular fan of the Maus and don't often build 1:72 scale, the kit inspired me to build it straight away. Detail is excellent, moulding quality is world class and surface textures would pass for a larger scale.
I built the model straight from the box, which includes two turnedmetal barrels and photo-etched parts for the mesh. Fit is generally very good but I found that fitting the tracks and lining up the bogie trucks perfectly between the lower hull and the armoured skirts was quite fiddly.
I used to think that the most challenging scheme for a military vehicle was three-colour WWII German camouflage, but more recently I have changed my mind. I think it is more of a challenge to make an overall shade such as German Dark Yellow or US Olive Drab look interesting without overtly drawing attention to the technique. The base colour is Tamiya's new lacquer paint LP-55 Dark Yellow 2. I was really happy with this paint, which sprayed beautifully and, unlike Tamiya's acrylic paints, was tough and smooth when it was dry.
Panel shading was done with Tamiya's Dark Brown Panel Line Access Color. It's the first time that I have used this product and I was impressed. I'll be writing this up in detail in Issue 173 of Model Military International magazine.
