T-34 Waffle Pattern TracksGas Hans, 1/72 scaleReviewed by Brett Green Summary
Background Gas Hans is a new Czech company that specialisies in replacement tracks for 1/72 scale kits.
One of their first batch of releases is a Waffle Pattern track set for Zvezda's 1/72 scale T-34 and SU-85 kits. Two other styles of T-34 tracks are also available from Gas Hans - Model 1942 and Split Tracks. The tracks are packed into a small stout box.
The parts are designed in CAD, mastered by 3D printing and the final product is perfectly cast in grey resin. Only nine resin parts are included, and six of these are spare track links plus one short section. The main parts are two fully assembled runs of tracks, with the castings being handed left and right.
The tracks are attached to their casting block by fine strips cast on to the end of each link. These look to be pretty easy to remove with either a new hobby blade or a razor saw. The side that has had the surgery will be facing the inside of the model, so you won't see any of the remnants of the casting strips.
Installation should be simplicity itself. There are no instructions supplied with the set but they really should not be necessary. These look like a drop fit straight onto the model. Just make sure you keep track of the left and right handed parts. The tracks are cast with a subtle and convincing drape along the top run.
Six spare links are also included These were frequestly seen on the hull or track guards of T-34 tanks. A seven-link length is also supplied for the front of the hull.
Detail of the tracks is superb.
The Zvezda T-34 and SU-85 kits are simple but nice. The kit tracks are flexible vinyl though, so these are an instant, easy and massive improvement. I think the pictures tell the story.
Conclusion Gas Hans' 1/72 scale T-34 Waffle Pattern tracks are beautifully detailed and perfectly cast. The drape on the upper run is subtle and convincing, cleanup will be fast and installation should be a simple drop fit. They are also a major and obvious improvement compared to the kit's vinyl tracks. This is a luxurious accessory for anyone planning to build one of Zvezda's small-scale T-34 family. Thanks to Gas Hans for the sample
