DAVID DOYLE BOOKS MARCH 2024 NEWS AND NEW RELEASES PREVIEW
Dear Friends,
Here in Milan it is that special time of year in the south when today we run the heat - tomorrow we run the air conditioning - in fact, we done both with in the same day recently! But, spring is just around the corner, and we've had several new books arrive (and a winner pulled for our drawing)!
First, we have our own C-47 Skytrain Legends of Warfare book. This 144-page hardbound book tells the story of the famed militarized version of the Douglas DC-3, and is a great companion to the Amazing Gooney Bird. Along with our C-47 book, we received a significant restock of the Legends of Warfare line and Schiffer military books.
Also just in are three new titles from Tankograd:
- REFORGER 78 Saxon Drive / Certain Shield #3049
- RAC Germany Armoured Vehicles of the Royal Armoured Corps during the Cold War in West Germany #9039
- Bv 206 S The Bandvagn 206 S in Bundeswehr Service #5097
At the same time, we also were restocked on many other Tankograd titles, as well as expanding our selection. In addition arriving this week was a restock of the Eagles over Pacific series of books.
Those of you who reserved copies of the above books have already been sent notification of their arrival - please use the links in those notifications in order to get the extra discount that comes with reserving. Speaking of reservations - Reservations for the reissue of the revised Son of Sherman will close 13 March- if you want this book - don't miss that deadline! Reservations will remain open a LITTLE while longer on the reprint of our massive US Dodge book as well as Panzer Tracts 15-2 on the Sd.Kfz. 251.
For details of how our no money down reservation program works, click here. Please be respectful of the program - while we know that sometimes things come up and commitments can't be honored - we BUY a book for everyone who reserves a book.
In addition to everything above, we had some time this past weekend to go through the books that came in one of our late 2023 inventory acquisitions. In addition to a LOT of new books, there unfortunately were a number of damaged publications, and several shopworn titles as well. For those that don't know - shopworn books are books that have been displayed in stores (and sometimes merely been in storage for years), and have scuffing of covers and other minor wear that comes from being handled in a store. While they are technically new, we don't feel comfortable selling them as "new" - thus they are displayed on our shopworn page. Both the shopworn and damaged books are offered at substantial discounts over our already low prices.
Seventy-nine years ago today one of the underappreciated but key battles of WWII in Europe began when forces of the 9th Armored Division remarkably were able to capture intact the Ludendorff Railway Bridge at Remagen. Demolition charges set by German forces failed to completely detonate, allowing thousands of Allied troops, including the new T26E3 Pershing tanks, to quickly cross the Rhine before the bridge finally collapsed ten days later. Not surprisingly, the Germans put considerable effort into knocking down the bridge. Their measures included firing the Karl-Gerät superheavy mortar at the bridge, as well as launching aerial attacks using the V-2 rocket as well as the Arado Ar 234 Blitz jet bomber. The US defended the bridge with an array of antiaircraft weapons, including Multiple Gun Motor Carriages and employed the secret Canal Defense Lights to thwart night attacks from the water. The film - The Bridge at Remagen - was based on this battle, although like so many "war films" - some elements of fiction were added - and some intriguing facts omitted from the movie.
Over the next few weeks we will be prepping for a couple of upcoming shows we will be displaying at - the Armor Modeling and Preservation Society international convention in South Bend, Indiana, and the Armed Forces Day Celebration in Findlay, Ohio - please plan on visiting us at one or both of these great events! At the former there will be a myriad of scale models on display in the hometown of the HMMWV, Weasel and Studebaker US6 - while at the latter there will be a myriad of full-size vehicles displayed along with weapons and militaria.
Many of you entered our drawing for the winner's choice of $100 of our books. Because the widespread ATT Network outage just before our original deadline could have interfered with some of you entering, we postponed the drawing until today - and we are pleased to say that the winner is David LaDow. David, please contact us from the email address you used to enter to claim your prize. If we don't hear from David by 14 March we will draw again.
Also - watch our newsletter next week when we will launch another drawing!
We remain grateful for your support!
Sincerely,
David and Denise Doyle
